The finest university in the state is undoubtedly the University of Pittsburgh, which is affiliated to the state. The university was begun in the year 1787 and was initially known as the Pittsburgh Academy. The Carlow University is another well-respected institution. It was the premier Catholic university in the state with an emphasis on women. The Community College of Allegheny County is a recommended college. The college is known for a holistic approach with Honors Programs and 170 different courses of study coexisting with sports, student societies and social clubs.
