Speaking about the history of Pittsburgh Sports baseball, the Enterprise, the Xanthas, and the Olympics were the earliest baseball teams in the city, even before 1876. These teams mostly competed against each other at the Recreation Park. Pittsburgh Pirates joined the trio much later in the year 1882 under the name of Alleghenies.

In 1887 Alleghenies moved to the National League from American Association and was purchased by Barney Dreyfuss in 1900 who played a vital role in starting the World Series. The Pirates have won five world championships in 1909, 1925, 1960, 1971 and 1979.

The Recreation Park in Pittsburgh has been marked in the history of football as the venue of first ever professional football game. The now famous Pittsburgh Steelers football team was found in 1933 under the nickname of Pirates. The team later changed its name to Steelers.
